This is the title of the article I read from the Sun-Herald Magazine in Sydney over the last weekend.  It was written by a dentist.

I must admit that I got very disturbed after reading the passage because it was so misleading and twisted.

He said,” As I say to my patients – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Modern dentistry offers a range of filling materials and none are 100 per cent perfect.  Dental amalgam still remains the most cost effective and easy to use. ..”

He also said,” Very sensitive instruments can detect billionths of a gram of a mercury vapour in the mouth of a person with amalgam fillings.  This is less than the normal consumption of organic compounds of mercury from dietary sources such as fish and tea, … and is far below the level that causes adverse health effects.”

So, for the faithful readers out there relying on his “expertise”, it is easy to come to the conclusion that there is nothing to worry about.  But, deep down, do you think that this should be adequate knowledge in their best interest?

For these innocent readers, would they know
a/ that mercury is such a potent neurotoxin that it can do so much harm especially to developing fetuses, infants, and children; or
b/ that mercury ranks Number 3 as the most poisonous substance, just after lead and arsenic; or
c/ that you can contaminate a 25-acre lake by less-than-a-teaspoonful of mercury, rendering all fishes there not safe for consumption?; or
d/ that dental amalgam fillings unquestionably contain mercury; or
e/ that talking about America alone, increasing number of state governments are imposing laws such that dentists need to install dental amalgam separators in their offices to stop the pollution to the sewers, or
f/ that they might be sleeping with the worse enemy to their health, and one day they have to pay the bill big time.

Even if we take the subject as debatable, I would think that it is good ethics for professionals to make known these risk factors to their patients so that they are given the chance to make a choice for themselves.

As a society, ultimately we have to answer these questions:
Is the innocent consumer made aware of the likely danger?
How much the professionals in the field are doing to “protect” these consumers?
How much the media are doing to uphold an unbiased presentation to the audience/readers out there?

I think each and every one of us, when we come to know about it, has a part to play in making this message known too.

Last time we were talking about watching clouds.  Have you tried?  How did it work out for you? I am going to tell you another way which is equally effective if not more.  I have tried it, and so many other friends have said this works for them too.

Simply give yourself a little task for the day and accomplish it!

It doesn’t have to be a big task or assignment. Indeed, I suggest that you start with something light, and simple that you surely can accomplish.  Just the act of doing it will make the difference.

For instance, I set a task for myself early in the morning like taking the clothing to the laundry shop before lunch.  I accomplish it and I am happy.  Likewise, I can set a small task like doing a booking on the internet, buying a magazine, writing my entry for the blog, going to the post office, paying a bill, deposit a cheque, and the like.  I think you get the picture.  The key is to just set out one task for the day, and accomplish it.  Don’t leave it to the next day.

If anything more to mention, this has to be a decision you make particularly for the day.  Going to the laundry shop is one thing, but making a decision to do it for the day is another.  I make a decision to make it happen.  I accomplish it.  There is a relief and extra satisfaction from within.

It works for me. I can almost guarantee it works for you too.

Firstly, it is about looking up and watching the clouds.

I always enjoy watching clouds.  They never fail to fascinate me.  The one I like most is the white ones against a backdrop of blue sky.  It can be the fluffy little ones that scattered across the sky like little cotton wools.  They look so cute, happy, and playful like children.  It can be the big patch that dominates the distant sky like an aircraft carrier.  Occasionally, they might come in dramatic shapes with varying shades and brightness.  Some might look like volcanoes, and others like mountain ranges. If you are lucky, you might find patterns that resemble a sea of mountains viewed from an elevation from afar.  Of course, the evening ones usually are the richest in colors and hues.  They always look so peaceful, pure, and leisurely flowing up there.

Imagine sitting on one of them, and having a ride for even a minute or two.  Feel the breeze. Submerge in the super fresh air up there. Let each and every one of the body cells bathe in that state of coolness and freshness.  What a treat! Don’t worry, the rays of the sun would give us just the right brightness and warmth we desire.  It could be the most soothing cleansing and massaging experience. I say cleansing because I believe that it can purify our mind, body, and soul, and take our worries and stress away.

The dark clouds could even be a huge blessing too. Just imagine the days of the drought.  Besides, it gives our place a good clean.  Kuala Lumpur is particularly blessed in this regard. Around this time of the year, you could almost always expect a good down pour by about 5pm in the afternoon.

Watching clouds could be a luxury if you are in one of the heavily polluted cities.  In this case, I would suggest you find a poster or download a good picture of the clouds and blue sky.  Have it hung up on a convenient spot.  It surely would lift the day.

I still remember my business visit to a doctor’s a month ago.  His idea is to make his place a holistic medical centre.  As patients or clients walk in, the first thing that impresses on them is the white clouds and blue sky.  The entire lobby including the ceiling is dressed up with the same wallpaper in that mood. What a feeling!

The picture shown here is one of my favorites.  It was taken in Petaling Jaya in Selangor, Malaysia.  What makes it interesting to me is the silhouettes of the palm trees. They look like soaring eagles to the sky. I find it very inspiring.  Hope you like it too.

I recall a joke on earthworms.  It goes like this…

One day, Teen Earthworm woke up and felt so bored because no one was around to play with him. Suddenly, he got an idea.  He cut himself into two halves and went out playing tennis.

Mother Earthworm saw it, got the idea and happily made herself into four pieces to play mah-jong (a traditional Chinese game of four).

When the two returned home later in the afternoon, they were shocked to see Father Earthworm lying on the floor, agonizing in a stain of blood.

He had gone too far.  Good gracious, he was thinking to play football!

Video: Virgin Galactic First Space Tourists -- Let the Journey Begin.

America has made history by having their first ever African American president.  Not too long ago, China has their first astronauts walking in space.  And, towards the end of the decade, we might be witnessing the first commercially run space flight for a journey of 2 and a half hours to the edge of space.

On the gloomy side of things, the world is overshadowed by the biggest economic crisis since the Great Depression in 1929. A lot is still in the unknown.

This is the era we live, a time of creation, greatness, volatility, and uncertainties.

Nobody doubts the world is changing.  However, as much as we acknowledge that change is a constant, we still find ourselves at times caught off guarded by the speed that changes happened, and the magnitude that happened.  Not too long ago, we have seen the big jump in petrol prices and the chained effects on the daily food and commodities.  If you are traveling using A$, what would you feel finding that the dollar shed 20% so suddenly out of nowhere?

As much as we acknowledge the presence of a bigger “uncertainty” factor, we never seem to have aptly prepared ourselves for the natural disaster or man-made crises (or are they synonymous?) like the SARS epidemic in 2003, Sichuan Earthquake in China, and the Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar earlier this year.

In a sea of change, if we are not changing, we will be left behind.

I think the best policy is to embrace change, be part of the change, and even get ahead of it.  Nevertheless, I think we should engage in better knowledge and awareness. Through learning, we can enhance our alertness to the changing environment and be more at ease with circumstances.

What would you do if you were given the 5 talents today?

Remember the parable in the Bible talking about the talents? It turned out that of the three servants the master entrusted, two went out and made handsome returns.  Only the third guy is so “cautious” that he dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.  By the way, I have done a quick research in the internet and come to know that a talent is roughly equal to US$840,000 today.  So, 5 talents would be over US$ 4.2 million.

I often picture us as young children attending play sessions in the kindergarten.  Now the teacher comes along in the class and hands us each a drawing paper.  It is as white as snow.  Whilst the teacher is busy trying to calm the crying ones and some others still running around, most of us start drawing on the paper.

Some draw in black.  Others use all the rainbow colors, red, pink, blue, yellow, black, orange, purple, brown, and green, etc.  As if it is still not enough, some even go for the mixing of colors.  What a party!

Some love to scribble on the paper and feel happy that they have a unique creation of their own. Occasionally, there might be one or two still looking at the paper, deep in thoughts.

When the bell goes, would you be surprised to see some blank papers returned?  If it were you, would you rather hand back the paper untouched?

If you ask me, I would say I am happily painting my way. At the end of the day, I believe that the life journey is whatever I dare, and I wouldn’t like to miss the chance of experiencing this wonderful path that God has gifted me. :)

You know, you have been my source of energy in continuing on this blog, in continuing doing the posts regularly no matter what.   I still do not know many of the indicators in the cpanel. However, when I see that the ranking is jumping from 13million to 9million to 8million, and now to 7million, I know I cannot stop.  Thanks for your support and encouragement.

For those of you who just come in to this space, this is my first blog and I am a newbie in the blogging world.  Any advice and comments on this space would always be appreciated.

There are times that I feel very limiting because there are things around me but I don’t know how to use them.  For instance, about comments, I still do not know how to display them and respond to them if I choose to.  I have just included a comments box on the sidebar.  This is the best I can do after “struggling” to find an appropriate format for over two hours.  :)

I sometimes imagine myself in a 5-star kitchen, and all I could do is to make a sausage with pan-fried eggs. Just bear with me, won’t you? :)

I have noted of a comment from Kandace and I would like to write back from here. Thanks, Kandace, for your kind words. You are not alone.  We all have things to overcome, but together we will be strong.  And, truly, even though I have no idea about who is visiting the space here, I can feel the company and the warmth from out there. It is obviously an added bonus by getting to know you and hearing your voice through the comments.  Thanks again for the company.

p.s. I hope everyone would like to hop in and share their life values.  Come and make this a fun place. Through sharing and participation, we all can contribute our bit to make the world a better place.  Surely, we can make the world our oyster. Health Expenditure % of GDP

Health Expenditure % of GDP

When it comes to health, most people naturally relate it to their own self.  Actually, it is more than a personal matter.  It is a family matter, a social matter, an economic matter.  It is global.  It is …

Health is a family matter.  Time and again, we see that a family can be so badly affected just because of one person’s illness.  Not too long ago, I learned of a story like so.  An indirect friend, Michael, moved from Hong Kong with his family to reside in Sydney.  The husband and wife both got very good jobs in the corporate. Two sons were doing well in school and university. It is a picture of a healthy happy family ready to explore the new horizon.  But one year later, shortly after the husband, Michael, was diagnosed cancer, we saw a totally different picture.  He had to give up his job.  He kind of shrank by one size. He turned almost bald. The wife quitted her job because she had to take care of the husband. And, as to the boys, they would not have as much time on their studies as they did part-time work after class to help out the family.  The elder one even considered to turn his full-time study into a part-time one in the following year.

Health is also a social matter.  It is not easy to cope with the stress and pressure when you have a very sick person at home.  At times, this might be the trigger for marriage breakdown, adolescent problems, depression, domestic violence, and the list goes on and on.

Health is also an economic issue.  Do you know that the total global expenditure for health (or rather say the sickness industry) was US$4.1 trillion+ in 2004.  America’s spending on health was 5.1% of the GDP in 1960, but rising to a staggering 15.3% of the GDP in 2005.  If this is any indicator to our trend, we have a cause to be concerned.  With the aging of the boomers, you can really feel the pressure is mounting.

For whatever we are doing now, we are handing a legacy to the future generations.

So, on reflection, you know that when you take care of your body, and your health, you are not only caring yourself, but you are doing a wonderful contribution to your family, your society, your country, and the world. Isn’t that nice? :)

Sometimes, we get easily carried away by things happening around us and we don’t realize that we have missed the big picture.  In the long run, we pay a bitter price.

Take mine as an example.  For a long time in the past, I was so focused on making money that I barely had much time for my family. My mind was so occupied that I often appeared as indifferent or insensitive.  Looking back, my family had missed out a good part of our life together especially the bringing up of our two boys during their adolescence years.

Having a concept of holistic life is important.  It helps us to keep things in prospective.

My model of a holistic life is represented by eight sectors joined together to make a full circle. You can imagine if the circle is full, it is like a fully inflated wheel.  Of course, it would run very smoothly.  By referring to the picture, you could evaluated your score from 0 (the center point), to full score 10 (the circumference) on each sector. When you link them together, you would see how round your “circle” is.

Some of the essential questions I would ask myself:
1/  Family – is it in name, or in substance?
2/  Health – am I settling for “not getting sick”, or attaining the optimal form and vitality?
3/  Wealth –  am I building pipelines or carrying buckets?
4/  Career –  is this still my passion, putting the money matter aside?
5/  Leisure – what else there I would like to do for pleasure?
6/  Relations – how well am I connected with my network of friends and contacts?
7/  Personal Development – do I put aside at least half an hour a day to nurture my knowledge bank?, and
8/  Spiritual – is there an even bigger picture beyond the earthly things?

You might come up with more questions, or you might even come up with a different version of holistic life altogether.  It is perfectly alright.  Whatever that is important to you counts. The main point here is to start us thinking. :)

Live Life, Junius.

Arriving at the magic number 10 in the posts here, I think it is time to count the beans so to speak, and consolidate my thoughts in order to move on from this point.

As I find out, blogging can be quite time consuming particularly if you want to explore the nuts and bolts that come with it.  One would have to weigh up what is put in and what is expected to come out of it.  I set certain expectations when I decided to enter blogging.  The said expectations or purposes become even stronger since the day 1.  I feel a sense of mission to continue.  I hope to add value.

I want to document my reasons here so that whenever I look at this post, it would be a handy reminder to keep me in focus.

Firstly, it is about making awareness on the importance of a holistic life (more on it next time).  When our road map becomes clearer, life changes for the better.

Secondly, it is the notion of “owning back our life”, more so for people who think they cannot get away from being enslaved to the boss or even their own business.  It is great if we can help people think even a little bit more outside the traditional box and not following a world of sheer conformity.  Life can be as beautiful as you make it happen.  And, on that road, there is no failure.

Thirdly, I like the internet world because of its people power, and knowledge power.  Running this blog is a good learning opportunity for me. Through improving on ourselves as a person, we can improve the world around us.

Lastly but not the least, I want to experience first hand the passive income potential that is so much talked about on internet marketing.

p.s. this post was written during my flight from KL to Sydney. The picture here was a convenient pick from the window.  God always surprises us with so many beautiful things, if only we have a moment to discover. :)

The keyword here is of course the “100 percent”.  Surprisingly or not surprisingly, most of us do not love our own selves that much.

Over the years I have come across messages relating to loving yourself and all that.  But, it really bought home for me this very question when I finished reading a book by Gay Hendricks.  It is titled Learning To Love Yourself.  Gay is a professor in counseling psychology and a world renowned author, as I come to know.

Back to the question.  Why 100 percent is so important, you might ask.  Allow me to share my way of understanding it. I am using “we” to mean each and every one of us (including myself of course) to make the points clearer.

We are carrying an invisible bag of rubbish, the “stuff” that we don’t like, don’t want to talk about, or even think about.  It all relates to past experiences back to even our childhood days.  It contains anger, hatred, guilt, argument, reprimand, shame, discontent, distrust, malice, and all those bad things.  The problem is that this bag of stuff is getting bigger and bigger, and one day it will haunt us big time.

We need to learn to love ourselves live. By first accepting, and then loving the way we are is the only way to liberate ourselves and to give us the peace inside and out. We have to deal with each of these hidden feelings or stuff one by one.  Don’t suppress it as we usually do.  Recognize it, bring it to the open, experience it in your mind, feel it, and accept it, and love yourself even with it.   It is kind of like shaking hands with these stuff, and letting go. Bottom-line, we love ourselves as a whole. It is a wholesome love, not selective love.  I tried it and I could feel the relief almost immediately.

Everything happens for a reason. The things we encounter, good or bad, all help to mold us. It is part of our growing up. It completes us.  Bad things might not be so bad after all if we learn and become wiser.

Love our enemy by starting loving ourselves. When we liberate ourselves by letting go all those negativity, and loving ourselves in a wholesome manner, our mind and heart are in congruency.  We are in peace, at ease, and in harmony. We start seeing thing differently.  We appreciate life more.

So much for the time being.  I think I have more to say but later.

If you like to contribute your thoughts, why not drop me a line.  Thanks.

Live life,
JuniusWong

It’s like going to Disneyland.

There has never been a dull moment. On the contrary, there might be just too many things to try at one time. You don’t know what to deal with first. :)

It is like walking into a huge library ever imaginable, so huge that no matter where you go, you still cannot see the other walls.  I love it.

Thanks to WordPress, it has made the life of newbies like me so much easier.  I can just put the different shapes and shades together, and I can create a picture of my own.  Who cares if the picture looks a bit foreign.  It is still my baby!

Only a few weeks down the track, I can converse with others like a veteran (just joking), frequently referring to jargons like plugins, theme, SEO, html, anchor link, and the like.

But amongst all the new excitement and adventures, there is one big blessing I find.  It is people sharing with each other.  It is incredible. It is so open, unselfish, and genuine. It is heart-felt.

Ever since I jumped onto this “blogging” wagon, I have been so blessed because I have been in the company of so many friendly people.  A lot of them seem always ready to bend forward or backward to help for no pecuniary benefits.  If it is not for passion, friendship, generosity, and all these good things, I don’t know what it is there.

Within a short span of time, I have come to know quite a lot of people.  Some are in contact face to face, others still as a photo or a name.  However, there is that invisible link that you can feel the people out there.  Some would likely to be friends forever.  Thank you all.

I am still wondering what Web 2.0 is about, among other things.  But I know, life would not be boring at all if you are with the bloggers. :)

Is there anything particular I want to try?  Yes, I would love to experience what it is like to have comments and advices coming in from all directions..... only if you would share with me one.  Thanks.

I had the privilege of listening to a speech by Arthur Yap of Penang over the weekend and since then the word Change has been ringing over my mind.  “Change! Change! Change! Change, la....”, he said.  Now this seed of Change is growing inside my head, thanks to Arthur.  By the way, I thoroughly enjoyed his speech, his passion and humour, though sometimes I don’t understand the parts in Bahasa Malaysia.

Change is a powerful word, no question about it.  For decades, the word “Think” has been dominating the business world, to the credit of IBM’s successful branding, which is equally empowering.  However, if I have to choose one now, I would prefer Change because it implies action.

I don’t know if you would agree with me on this one.  Sometimes, we’re sort of getting to a state where we feel comfortable and lose the impetus to run the extra miles.  At this stage, things generally come to a plateau, not going down but not going up either. The mind might be on holiday. And, suddenly we find something which we can focus and take on new heights. I think this time I have found it.

It is not just Change.  It is Change, Change, Change, Change, Change, la…..

It is interesting how the mindset can so easily be tuned (if you want it to) and start to show in the ways you do things.  Because of the word, I have in so many times, deliberately chosen to do things differently and the feeling is nice.  I know that I am the reason for what I become.

If you are in the kind of plateau I describe, or the mind about to finish its holiday, why not try this word. Say it so many times to yourself, say it out loudly, in front of the mirror or what, and see if it works. :)

The morning sun at Mt Kinabalu

The morning sun at Mt Kinabalu

It was indeed a trip to remember.  Through the two days going up and down the mountain, I have gone through a lot physically, mentally, and spiritually.  I write this down to share what I have gone through and to remind myself of this incredible experience I had.  And, praise the Lord for giving me this opportunity of learning.

Mount Kinabalu, located in Sabah, is the highest mountain in South East Asia, and is 4,095.2m above sea level.  Usually, people spend 2 days and 1 night to cater for the climb.  The first day is to start the climb from the base, the Kinabalu Park Headquarters all the way to Laban Rata, a rest-house located (3,263m) about three-quarters way to the top.  After staying there for the night, one would start doing the rest of the climb from about 2am in the morning so as to meet the sunrise at the summit by around 6am.  Following that is the trip climbing down to the base, with a brief stopover at Laban Rata again for a lunch.  This is what people generally do for the climb.

Every year, as I was told, there is a competition going on to finish the climb from base to the summit and back in the shortest time.  The fastest record so far is 2 hours 36 minutes, by a guy from Spain.  It is a really, really incredible speed.  In contrast, I ended up spending roughly nine (9) hours for the trip up to Laban Rata in day 1, and a record-breaking 17 hours to finish the rest to bring me back to the base in day 2. For your information, my last climbing experience happened some 24 years ago when I was at the Yellow Mountain in China.  Needless to say, this one was very demanding to me.  But I enjoyed it tremendously.

The answer might be a yes or no. For countries like Singapore where the superannuation contribution every year is as high as 40%., the answer is a likely yes. However, for countries on the other end of the scale, like Australia and New Zealand, where the contribution is below 10%, the answer is most obviously a no.

As we know, the snowball effect of superannuation depends on a combination of factors, namely,

1/ start contributing at early age, and

2/ size of your contribution every year, and

3/ years that you consistently contributing to your superannuation, and

4/ performance of your superannuation fund / portfolio, and

5/ how safe is your investment vehicle(s).

Things has changed so much over the last twenty, thirty years that at times we couldn’t help feeling a bit off balance. :)

For instance, the notion of working hard is no longer playing such an importance as before.  More and more, people find the answer to achieving better results through collaboration. In other words, we are moving from a “ME” mentality to a “WE” mentality.

This paradigm shift places emphasis on two very important elements in wealth creation, namely, teamwork, and leverage. These concepts are not new, but it really makes a big difference when we can apply them with total conviction and persistence

Teamwork if put right, as I imagine, is like suddenly having the extra turbo charge once the various parts are working in unison.  Things can flow so effortlessly and feeling is great.

Passive income or sometimes called residual income is smart money because it gives you the freedom to do other things whilst the money stream keeps coming to you. As people often say, you continue to make money whilst you sleep.

Different types of passive income have different characteristics.  The typical ones we come across most often are as follows:

Interest from Bank –-- it is a good passive source of income.  It is also a convenient spot to park your extra cash whilst you decide what investment vehicles to look for.

Dividend income --- holding stock (shares) for yield is one of the strategies of good financial planning.  In good times in particular, this is an excellent leverage because you can tap into the high-yield blue chips and ride on their extra success easily.

Rental income from properties / other assets
--- this covers most kind of rentals, from leasing of residential or office premises , to leasing of equipment or machinery, etc. By allowing a small portion for expenditure, you can hire a management office or an agent to take care of everything for you. Potential capital gains on properties is often a sweet added bonus.

Royalties and Patents
--- income derived in this class are usually relating to “intellectual properties”.  Common examples involve professionals like singers, authors, and inventors, etc.  If you have special talents, go for it.

I like traveling and I like photography.  I have just returned from a holiday trip to Kota Kinabalu in East Malaysia.  This picture was taken in one of the islands there.  The place is highly recommended.

Traveling on a holiday is fun.  However, when you think about it, we really need three things to be able to do it.

We need Time, Money, and Health!

Sometimes, the last one is easily left out because for most of us, health is more like a given.  I have a friend whose mother is on dialysis.  She has been doing it for a few years now.  She said she simply cannot do any travelling because she has to have the treatment three times in a week to get going.  I couldn't imagine what it would be like to be in that situation.  She is a very brave lady.  Hope there is good news in her recovery.

If we are healthy enough to walk about, but not having enough money or time, what can we do?  For most of us, we will settle for a breakaway holiday to break away from the stress and headache life day to day.  But, would it be better if we do not need a breakaway, but can have the total freedom to travel anytime we want?  Think "passive income" or better still "passive incomes".

Or, if you can think of anything better, please share your thoughts with us. Cheers.

The first time these three words, "Own Your Life", makes a big impression on me is through the reading of Don Failla's book "the 45 second presentation that will change your life".  He said," when you substract the sleeping time,  commuting time, working time and things you have to do each and every day of your life, most people don't have more than one or two hours each day to do what they would like to do -- and then would they have the money to do it? ....."

The great irony is that most people don't even realise that they have quietly given away the control of their life to the surroundings. For most of them, they live a life that is literally "owned" by their boss, their mortgage on the property, the credit card debts, or even their own business(es) they run.  And before they know it, the best part of their life is going to be over.  I undertstand, because I had been in those situations before.
